About the Program
TRI's adaptive horsemanship classes include mounted and ground activities and are led by PATH or CHA certified instructors, according to its website. TRI describes these lessons as adaptive horsemanship, a recreational activity, rather than therapy (see our guide to therapeutic riding). Its para-dressage program, taught by a USEF-certified coach, is for riders with permanent physical or visual disabilities who want a competitive track, and TRI says it is a USEF/USPEA Para-Equestrian Dressage Center of Excellence.
ConnEQtions is an unmounted program for groups of 5 to 15 people, with a warm-up, hands-on time with horses and a wrap-up. The Equicizer, a mechanical horse, suits people recovering from injury or illness, learning to mount and dismount, or building strength and balance before riding.

History and Facility
TRI dates to 1984. It operated on Joy Road in Ann Arbor from 1997 to 2010, then built the Harold and Kay Peplau Therapeutic Riding Center on 46 acres on Morgan Road, which opened to riders in January 2011. The site has a heated indoor arena, an outdoor arena, a 20-stall barn and 12 acres of fenced pasture. TRI says volunteers must be at least 14.
