About the Program

According to its website, therapeutic riding lessons include basic riding skills, exercises, games, grooming and tacking. Equine assisted learning focuses on ground work, horse care and the study of horse behavior, and is offered as private or semi-private lessons.

Lessons last 30 minutes and run in 6 to 10 week sessions year round, with a separate summer session. CTREE also hosts educational field trips that introduce local school groups to horses.

Getting Started

Every rider applies, is evaluated, and is approved before being scheduled. The evaluation includes a tour of the facility and a short riding session, conducted by a PATH Intl. certified instructor and trained volunteers. Approved riders are scheduled for weekly lessons based on availability.

As listed, lessons cost $50 per 30-minute lesson, or $75 per lesson for riders enrolling only in the summer session. Scholarships are available, and families who need help with the cost can apply. Visits must be scheduled in advance and accompanied by a CTREE instructor or staff member; drop-ins are not permitted.

The Horses and Staff

The team includes Executive Director Cathleen Curran, Program Director Jill Carney, Director of Equine Care Shannon Bozzuto Chant and instructor Jessica Garcia. Carney, Chant and Garcia are listed as PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructors; Chant has been with CTREE since 2009.

The herd includes Archie, a Cleveland Bay, and Noodles and Lucky, who came from Montauk. CTREE also recruits volunteers to work with riders and horses.
