More about this center

About the Program

Three women founded CTRH in 1985 with five riders and one pony. Its mission is improving the lives of people affected by disabilities and unique challenges through equine-assisted services. It says it serves more than 5,100 people a year, and its website lists about 200 volunteers and a herd of 13 horses.

Adaptive riding lessons are one hour in groups of two to four riders, led by PATH Intl. certified instructors. Each rider has a horse leader and up to two side walkers, and lessons include grooming, tacking, mounted exercises and games. In hippotherapy, a licensed occupational or physical therapist uses the horse's movement to work on balance, coordination, strength and sensory processing. Both run as 8-week sessions. The weight limit is 175 pounds for balanced riders and 150 pounds for riders who need more support.

Unmounted Programs and Outreach

The Grounds Program gives children and adults with epilepsy time with horses without riding: grooming, leading, horse care and guided sensory activities. Family Fun with Horses is a one-hour unmounted session for up to eight family members, ages 5 and up. Its miniature horses visit schools, care centers and community programs for 45 to 60 minute sessions, and a summer reading program rewards young readers with prizes.

Staff

Caroline Tanner is the executive director. The staff page lists two PATH Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructors, a licensed physical therapist and four licensed occupational therapists, one of whom is also a PATH Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructor.

Getting Started

New participants submit a rider information and consent form and a medical form by fax or mail, then attend a pre-enrollment visit. Acceptance depends on safety and medical considerations, and accepted riders then register for classes. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required, and CTRH provides helmets.

CTRH accepts cash, check or credit card. It does not bill insurance but will provide paperwork for claims, and it suggests families contact their county Board of Developmental Disabilities about funding. It works with Clermont, Hamilton, Butler and Warren counties. Call (513) 831-7050 for current rates. See our guide to equine therapy costs.

Location

CTRH is at 1342 US Highway 50, Milford, OH 45150. Schedule visits in advance, and enter through the main office door, not the barn.

Common Questions

Answered from the center’s own website and public records.

How do I enroll?

Send in the rider information, consent and medical forms from the CTRH website, then attend a pre-enrollment visit. Accepted riders register for an 8-week session.

What are the age requirements?

Hippotherapy patients can start at 2.5 years old and adaptive riders at age 5. There is no upper age limit.

What happens if we miss a lesson?

With at least 24 hours' notice, the absence is credited toward the next session or refunded on request. Riders more than 15 minutes late cannot ride that day. When Milford schools close for winter weather, CTRH closes too.
