More about this center
About the Program
According to its website, McKenna Farms began in 2001 with 10 children, one physical therapist assistant, five volunteers and two horses. It now lists 25 therapists serving more than 500 children per week.
Therapists work both in a clinic setting and with horses through hippotherapy. Therapy requires a physician's prescription. The site lists diagnoses served including autism, sensory integration dysfunction, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury and feeding disorders.
Riding and Horses Helping Heroes
Therapeutic riding lessons are taught by PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors, the site says, and cover grooming, tacking and horse care along with riding skills.
Horses Helping Heroes offers group sessions for law enforcement and first responders and private riding lessons for veterans. The site says the group program is offered at no cost to participants and is funded by grants and donations.
The Farm
The site describes a renovated clinic in a Civil War-era farmhouse, eight therapy cottages, indoor and outdoor arenas, a sensory trail and a wooded trail. The barn houses 15 horses and two miniature horses.
