More about this center
About the Program
Therapeutic riding runs in 10-week spring and fall sessions and during summer camp. The center says the horse's movement works the rider's core, supporting balance, breathing and mobility, and that the bond with the horse helps riders build self-esteem and coping skills.
Equine facilitated learning is an educational, ground-based program focused on trust, teamwork, relationships and leadership. It runs in 10-week spring and fall sessions plus a 6-week winter session.
Summer camp runs in two-week sessions, three days a week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each day includes an hour of riding plus activities such as painting and water games.
The Horses and Facility
The center says it has grown from 35 riders and 4 horses to more than 135 students each week. Its Our Horses page lists 16 horses, from a Shetland/Welsh pony to a Belgian draft, including Quarter Horses, Rocky Mountain horses and a Haflinger.
The center sits on the historic Raemelton Farm, the former Frank Black estate, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Facilities include an outdoor arena, an indoor arena with a heated viewing room, a smaller climate-controlled indoor arena, an ADA-accessible grooming and tacking barn, ADA-accessible restrooms, two stall barns and pasture. The center bought the 34 acres and three farm buildings it had leased for 20 years.
Hannah Nelson is the executive director and Tatum Vetter is the program director.
Volunteering
Volunteers can work as sidewalkers (age 13 and up) or horse leaders (age 14 and up, with prior horse experience and training), or help in the barns and on the grounds. Class volunteers commit to the same weekly time slot for a 10-week session, and volunteers over 18 complete a criminal background check. Call 419-756-0040 or fill out the volunteer form on the center's website to get started.
