More about this center
About the Program
Therapeutic riding is the center of the ranch's work. The website describes it as a program for people with physical, emotional or developmental challenges, says each rider is assessed so lessons fit their needs and goals, and describes the riding as building physical strength, coordination and self-esteem. Riding runs in sessions, with an assessment week before the fall session begins.
The veterans program uses horseback riding and peer support to build confidence and resilience (see equine therapy for veterans). Tiny Trots is a group for preschool children that meets on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.
The Staff
Lauren Harrell, LRT, CTRS, is the executive director. The team also includes Lexi Weaver (barn manager and instructor), Tracy Parham (CTRI instructor), Sarah Snow (program administrator) and Linda Williford (volunteer coordinator).
Volunteering and Community
Volunteers help with riding lessons and at events. To start, fill out the volunteer application on the website; staff then follow up, and new volunteers attend an orientation and complete any required training.
The ranch hosts community events such as Trunk or Treat, a fall Harvest Hoedown and the annual Derby Dash Bash, held on Kentucky Derby day, which raises money for scholarships and operating costs. The ranch has served the Greenville area since 1991.
Location
Rocking Horse Ranch is at 1721 Blue Banks Farm Road in Greenville, in Pitt County, North Carolina.
