More about this center

About the Program

The name stands for "Special Horses Assisting with Miracles in Recovery Offering Comfort and Kindness." In sessions, veterans and first responders guide horses through obstacles that represent challenges in their daily lives, such as trauma or grief, and learn to handle a large animal. Founder Janet Brennan says horses mirror people's emotions, which gives participants a way to recognize and work through what they are feeling.

The organization was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2014. It is one of several options for equine therapy for veterans in the Philadelphia region.

The Horses and Staff

Janet Brennan is the founder and president. She came up with the idea while working as an emergency room trauma nurse, and her father is a Vietnam veteran. Jim Buszka, a Navy veteran who served in the Gulf War, completed the program himself and became an equine specialist working with other veterans.

Brennan credits her first horse, Irish, with starting the program. Sunny is another of the farm's horses.
