About the Program

According to its website, therapeutic riding lessons are led by PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors and set goals for each rider in physical, emotional, cognitive and social skills. Group lessons have no more than four riders and include 10 to 15 minutes of grooming before riding. Lessons run in 14-week fall and spring semesters and a 6-week summer semester.

Horses for Heroes is free for active-duty service members and veterans, with proof of service required. The site says it is funded by a Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance grant. Sessions run eight weeks year-round, and each two-hour lesson covers horse handling, groundwork and basic care, with the last 30 minutes set aside for fellowship. Lessons are currently unmounted. See our guide to equine therapy for veterans.

Getting Started

For therapeutic riding, families fill out an online interest form and are placed on a waitlist if lessons are full. When a spot opens, the center sends an application that includes a medical history form signed by the rider's primary care physician, then schedules a tour and on-site evaluation. Riders must be at least 4 years old, and the weight limit for mounted work is 180 lbs.

Published fees, as listed: a one-time $75 evaluation fee, and weekly group lesson tuition of $770 for a spring or fall semester and $440 for summer. The center does not accept insurance or Medicare. Call 713-436-6625 to confirm current fees and private lesson pricing.
