According to its website, CORRAL groups have no more than three riders and last about 30 minutes. Sessions combine tasks and games aimed at physical strength and thinking skills with an emphasis on developing riding skills in a safe environment, and goals are set for each rider at the start of a session with input from parents or teachers. Each rider is supported by a team of one to three volunteers.
The site lists classes on Mondays, Thursdays and every other Saturday. Lessons are taught by PATH Intl. certified instructors Brown Powell, Marie Powell or Cheryl Reed. The site lists a rider weight limit of 150 lbs.
History
CORRAL says it formed in the fall of 1987 and began operating in spring 1988 out of the historic Sewell barn in Roscoe, Georgia. Brown and Marie Powell developed the program. The site says CORRAL is funded by grants, private donations, volunteers and designated United Way gifts, which allows classes to remain free.
Volunteering
Volunteers tack and untack horses and lead or side-walk during classes. The website says volunteers must be at least 16, may observe a class before joining, and are trained at least once a year. A volunteer form is posted on the site.
