About the Program
According to its website, EquiCenter opened its doors with its adaptive riding program in 2004 and later added therapeutic horticulture, farm-to-table cooking classes, mustang gentling and nature-based education. It is a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center and says all of its riding instructors are PATH certified.
Adaptive riding lessons are built around each rider's individual goals, set with the participant and caregivers. A trained volunteer team leads the horse and walks beside the rider. The center lists riders with diagnoses such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, stroke and traumatic brain injury. It also lists conditions for which riding may not be appropriate, including children under 2, uncontrolled seizures and limited head or neck control.
Veterans and First Responders
Heroes & Horses offers adaptive riding and unmounted horsemanship for individual veterans and veteran groups. Mission Mustang, which the center developed with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, pairs people living with post-traumatic stress, with a focus on veterans and first responders, with captive wild mustangs. Participants gentle and train the horses and prepare them for new homes. The website says all horticulture programs, including the weekly Veteran Farm & Wellness program, are free to veterans. Getting Started
Families start by completing the Equine Programs Interest Form on the website, emailing info@equicenterny.org or calling (585) 624-7777. Adaptive riding has a waitlist, so the center encourages early inquiries; unmounted horsemanship or horticulture may be available in the meantime. The riding year has four sessions, and new riders complete medical history and release forms. A scholarship application is available, and families who need help with the cost can apply.
Groups and Volunteering
Through its HEAL program, EquiCenter hosts one-day or multi-week outdoor field trips for K-12 schools, youth groups and social organizations. Pony parties are private two-hour weekend events with ground-based horse time and no riding; as listed, they start at $325 for up to 12 guests.
Equine program volunteers help with adaptive riding and barn care. Volunteers must be 14 or older; no horse experience is needed. The center also schedules group workdays on its 3-acre teaching farm.
