About the Program
Therapeutic riding lessons are generally held weekly in 45-minute blocks, and the center says its programs are taught by PATH Intl. certified instructors. Riders must be at least four years old and within the center's height and weight limits. Therapeutic horsemanship is a non-riding option built around grooming, leading and bonding with the horses.
Resilience training for veterans and first responders is a five-week, five-session program on the ground that combines basic horsemanship with mindfulness, boundary setting and nonverbal communication. No horse experience is needed. The equine-assisted wellness program uses ground activities to support people coping with anxiety, depression, grief, chronic stress, trauma, a cancer diagnosis or caregiver burnout.
According to its website, the center plans to add equine-assisted psychotherapy, led by Judith Halden, LCSW. Equine Experience Days are one-day programs for people with special needs that pair horse time with gardening, art and music.
The Horses and Staff
The website lists 13 horses and a team led by Executive Director Candice Sciarrillo, Chief Program Officer Liz Fortes and Barn Manager Jenna Galasso. It says the team includes physical therapists, occupational therapists and licensed educators alongside PATH-certified instructors.

History
Pegasus held its first sessions in September 1975 at Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, Connecticut. It opened the Brewster farm in fall 2007. The center describes its service area as Putnam County, New York and Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Volunteering
Volunteers must be at least 14. Sidewalkers need no horse experience, while horse leaders need general horse knowledge. Applicants email a completed application to volunteer@pegasustr.org, attend an orientation and are asked to commit to the same day and time each week.
