The Equestrian Therapy Program at Fassett Farm

About the Program

Therapeutic riding is open to riders age 4 and older who have at least basic sitting balance and head control. Every rider needs a completed forms packet and a physician referral form. Students come through area hospitals, schools, therapists and physicians, or on their own.

The program's website describes hippotherapy as a treatment used by physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists, and says hippotherapy riders are referred by their therapists. Equine-assisted learning involves no riding and works on each student's learning goals through horse-related activities, with a curriculum set by the student's educator and the equine specialist. The Leading to Literacy reading program builds on equine-assisted learning. The summer camp for ages 6 to 16 covers riding, grooming, leading, horse care, feeding and riding equipment, and the camp page lists a fee of $250.

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy sessions are ground-based, with no riding, and follow the EAGALA model, typically with a therapist and an equine specialist. They are led by Allison Griesdorn, a Licensed Independent Social Worker, EAGALA-certified mental health professional and PATH Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructor. The program serves children, adults and families, describes itself as LGBTQIA+ affirming, and also offers traditional office therapy in person or by telehealth.

According to the website, the practice is in network with Medical Mutual, Aetna and Optum/UnitedHealthcare and accepts self-pay, and financial aid or local funding may be available. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday by emailing allison@etpfarm.org or calling or texting 567-825-1319.

History and Staff

Ann Fassett started the program in 1982 at her Briarhedge Farm, and regular ten-week sessions began in 1984. Classes are held at Fassett Farm, which the program owns, with indoor and outdoor arenas, woods and trails. Ground was broken in 2010 for a new building with a second indoor arena and more stalls.

Michele Andrews-Sabol is the executive director. The staff page lists instructors including Nancy Kuck (PATH Intl.), and the About page says instructors hold PATH Intl. certification.

Volunteering

The program is at 22532 Bowsher Road, Cridersville, Ohio 45806, just outside Lima. The office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (hours may vary); lessons are also held on Saturdays.
