About the Program
According to its website, the therapeutic riding program began in 1974. Riders take group or private lessons on gentle horses trained for the work, and regional agencies and private physicians refer people to the program.
Head Instructor Carolyn Bailey is certified by PATH Intl. and the Cheff Center. Executive Director Adriene Kramer is a certified instructor through PATH Intl., the American Riding Instructor Association and Centered Riding, and holds a bachelor's degree in equine business management from Johnson & Wales University. A Yellow Springs native, she started lessons at the Centre as a child and began teaching there at 16.
History
Louise Soelberg, a former professional dancer, founded the Centre in 1959 on land leased from Antioch College. Horsemanship was first taught there as a physical education class for Antioch students. The Riding Centre Association has held 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status since 1976. It is funded by grants, fundraisers, private donations and modest lesson fees.
Facilities and Day Camps
The Centre sits on 60 acres within the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. The website lists two barns, pastures, a large outdoor ring, a lighted indoor ring, a cross-country course and wooded trails. The Centre also offers horse boarding and hosts dressage shows as part of the Dayton Local Show Circuit.
Children's day camps usually run one week, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from mid-June to mid-August. Each camper is assigned a horse to care for during the week. The website lists the weekly camp fee as $283.25, with a 3% surcharge for paying online.
Volunteering
Therapeutic lessons rely on volunteer horse walkers and side walkers, and one lesson with five riders can need up to 10 volunteers. Volunteers also help build and maintain the facilities, and riders can earn community service by cleaning stalls or maintaining trails. Contact the Centre by phone or email to get involved.
