About the Program
Meghan Lyons Cowan founded Lasata Farm LLC in 2008. The farm describes its mission as promoting wellness, healing and personal growth for all people, including those with unique needs, through education and equine-assisted activities.
Lessons run in six-week sessions through the year and last up to an hour depending on the rider's age and needs. They usually include grooming and preparing the horse before and after the ride. The farm says it makes inclusion a priority and accommodates many groups of riders with disabilities. Summer horsemanship camps are open to children 6 and older and to adults, and no riding experience is needed.
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning
According to the farm, psychotherapy sessions are provided by licensed mental health professionals working with the farm's equine specialists, and its staff page says psychotherapy is offered in partnership with Restore Counseling Center. Sessions focus on ground activities with the horses rather than riding. The farm lists support for concerns such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADD, behavioral issues, substance abuse, eating disorders and relationship or communication needs.
Equine-assisted learning uses similar ground work with goals set by the individual or group, such as leadership skills for a school group, sales goals for a company or resiliency training for military members.
The Horses and Staff
Cowan holds Centered Riding Level II certification, has worked with riders since 2001 and served as director of education at Thorncroft Equestrian Center in Malvern. Heather McWilliams, MS, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist and PATH Intl. instructor. Shannon, an equine-assisted learning specialist, is certified as an Equine Assisted Learning Practitioner through the Equine Psychotherapy Institute and in Stable Moments, a program for foster and adopted youth.
The herd includes Quarter Horses, a Quarter Horse and Belgian cross, a Haflinger, a Thoroughbred, a mule, a pony, a miniature horse and a donkey.
Volunteers must be at least 13, and volunteers 18 and older need a background check and clearances. Roles include leading and grooming horses, barn and property work, fundraising and paperwork.

Lasata Farm is at 8 Abbott Lane, Coatesville, PA 19320, about two miles north of Cochranville in Chester County. Visits are by appointment only, and the office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
