About the Program
Wings of Hope was founded in 1996 by Margaret Dickens and Patti Pace, who had seen how horses helped at-risk youth while working at a state residential treatment facility in Johnson County, its website says. The center describes its purpose as providing hope and healing through gentle horses and the love of God.
Weekly services run September through May, Monday through Thursday, weather permitting. Mounted lessons last one hour in groups of up to four riders, and ground lessons are 30-minute private sessions, according to the FAQ. Getting Started
Families start by submitting the online interest form. Later steps are an application, a medical form completed by a licensed healthcare professional, and a free evaluation of about 30 minutes to an hour with no riding. The FAQ estimates the waitlist at 12 months or more in one answer and 6 months to 1-2 years in another, with openings created mainly when a current client leaves.
Mounted riders must weigh 175 lbs or less, wear a helmet and sit up without full reliance on others. Wheelchair and walker users are welcome, with conditions listed in the FAQ.

How much do lessons cost?
