About the Program
Therapeutic riding lessons are taught by PATH Intl. certified instructors. Each student has individual goals, such as better trunk control or hand-eye coordination, and lessons also include grooming and leading. Classes have no more than four mounted riders, are grouped by age and ability, and run Monday through Saturday. Students ride once a week for 45 to 60 minutes over a six-week session.
Speech in Motion combines horseback riding with targeted speech therapy for people working on speech and language development. It is led by Perry Flynn, a licensed speech therapist (CCC/SLP) who is also a PATH Intl. certified instructor and volunteers with the center.
The Veterans' Program is provided at no cost. Every veteran starts with groundwork such as grooming and leading, then can move on to beginning riding or advanced ground levels. Other options include Catch and Release, which involves working with the herd and daily care, and mentoring newer veterans. The program addresses issues such as PTSD, anxiety and depression, along with teamwork and physical strength. Read more about equine therapy for veterans.

Getting Started
New riders first visit to meet staff, discuss goals and tour the facility, then complete registration and join the waiting list. Before riding begins, the student, family, instructors and any therapists, educators or physicians decide together whether riding is a good fit.
Volunteers can serve as sidewalkers (ages 14 and up), horse leaders (16 and up), barn help (13 and up with a parent) or in work groups, office support and fundraising.

HORSEPOWER is at 4537 Walpole Rd., High Point, NC 27265, on a 53-acre farm with multiple arenas. Tours can be scheduled through the center's website or by calling (336) 931-1424.
