Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Tobaccoville, North Carolina, incorporated in 1997. About the Program
Riverwood is a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center, according to its website. In its therapeutic riding classes, nationally certified instructors teach riders of a variety of ability levels. Lessons may include grooming, stable management, individual exercises, riding skills, games and trail riding. Riders need medical clearance from a physician and must meet PATH Intl. safety requirements.
Equine-assisted learning is described as a non-therapy approach to building life skills. Sessions are led by a PATH Intl. EAL professional and an equine specialist and can be one-time groups, 6 to 8 weekly group sessions, or weekly individual sessions. Team building sessions for organizations use unmounted activities with horses.
The community-based learning program is a non-riding program for teens 14 and up and adults with special needs who plan to work or continue their education. Students learn farm and animal care and work at The Coop, the center's farm store.
Mobile Outreach
The mobile program uses a horse trailer renovated to look like the inside of the barn and carries two miniature horses. It visits assisted living and retirement centers, schools, at-risk youth programs and community events. The Horses and Staff
The Our Horses page lists 12 horses besides retired ones, including Quarter Horses, paints, a Gypsy Vanner, a Knabstrupper and two miniatures. Some are donated and some leased.
Michele Carter is the interim executive director and equine manager, and Amanda Rector is the lead instructor. Both are PATH Intl. certified instructors. The barn, completed in 2002, has a 60 by 120 foot indoor arena, a classroom with an observation window and five stalls.
Volunteering
Class volunteers must be at least 14 years old and work as horse leaders or side-walkers. Orientations are held every other month. Volunteers can sign up through the website or by emailing info@riverwoodtrc.org.

How do I enroll a rider?

How much do lessons cost?
As listed, weekly group, semi-private and private classes are $40 per class, billed monthly by email invoice. The center says weekly classes are heavily subsidized, and families who need help with the cost can call the office about scholarships.
