More about this center

About the Program

In hippotherapy sessions, therapists use positions such as sitting forward, side sitting, riding backward, lying prone and hands-and-knees to work on posture, core strength, balance and body awareness. A trained horse handler and side walkers support each session as needed. Quest says time on the horse usually lasts 5 to 20 minutes within a 45-minute session, and that this is therapy rather than riding lessons, with no reins or saddle.

Children do not need hippotherapy to receive OT or PT at Quest. Each child gets a plan with three-month and six-month goals. The SLICE summer intensive runs June through August with sessions two to three times a week and themes that change every two weeks. Camp Quest is led by occupational therapists. Early intervention for children from birth to 3 (physical, occupational and speech therapy with specialized instruction) takes place in the home or community, not at Quest, through Chester County MH/IDD. Free Beats & Bops music classes are led by a board-certified music therapist.

The Horses and Staff

Quest lists nine ponies and horses, from Haflingers and Fjords to a Percheron cross and a miniature horse. Therapists match each child with a pony based on movement, size and temperament. Lisa Newcomb is the executive director and Taylor Knox is director of therapy services.

History and Volunteering

Sandy McCloskey founded Quest in 1996 with six children seen once a week. The center now serves more than 125 children each week.

Volunteers lead horses, side walk, groom and help with horse care and the facility. They commit to at least 2.5 hours a week and must complete Pennsylvania criminal record and child abuse clearances, plus an FBI check for anyone who has not lived in Pennsylvania for 10 consecutive years. Horse experience is preferred. Contact KWest@Questtherapeutic.com.

Location

Quest is at 461 Cann Road, West Chester, PA 19382, in Chester County. The indoor arena lets therapy continue year-round, though mounted work pauses when the heat index is above 95°F or in severe weather.

Common Questions

Answered from the center’s own website and public records.

How do I get started?

Apply through the Apply for Services page on the website or call 610-692-6362. A formal diagnosis is not needed, but Quest requires a script from the child's pediatrician.

How much does it cost?

Quest lists an out-of-pocket rate of $150 per 45-minute session, with a $15 discount for same-day payment. It is in network only with Keystone First, which has a limited number of slots. Scholarships are available when funds allow, and families who need help with the cost can apply. See our guide to equine therapy costs.

Can my child come for just a few sessions?

Quest says it generally cannot accommodate only a few visits, since progress depends on regular sessions. The SLICE summer intensive is an option for focused short-term therapy.
