About the Program
Purple Pony is a member of PATH Intl. and says it has offered lessons for more than 20 years. Riders take part in weekly lessons and help care for the therapy horses.
New riders start in the Primary Rider program. Riders who progress can move on to the Independent Rider program's higher-level classes, and the Ground Work program is open to people who want to build skills without riding. Lessons run weekly in 9-week sessions in the fall and spring.
The Horses and Facility
Lessons take place at KD Ranch, which has indoor and outdoor riding arenas and several pastures. An outdoor sensory trail lets riders and horses work through obstacles together.
The website lists eight horses: Goldy and Bailey (Standardbreds), Kismet (Quarter Horse and Percheron/Clydesdale cross), Paint (Quarter Horse Paint), Butter and Bubba (Haflingers), CJ (Pinto pony) and Cookie (Morgan/Haflinger cross).
Volunteering
Volunteers must be at least 16. No horse or therapy experience is needed, and training is provided. Volunteers help riders during lessons, supervise the horses, or help with events and office work, and the program asks for about 2 hours a week during each 9-week session.
