More about this center
About the Program
Eagles' Wings offers mounted riding meant to support the physical, cognitive, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities. The center says riders work on balance, strength, posture, coordination, communication and confidence.
Its website lists more than 20 conditions that can benefit from therapeutic riding, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delays, hearing and speech impairments, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, amputations, paralysis, PTSD, substance abuse and terminal illness. The organization has held IRS tax-exempt status since 2006.
Getting Started
The center runs four eight-week sessions a year, with winter, spring, summer and fall terms. Each session includes eight one-hour classes, and classes meet on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The listed cost is $320 per rider per session.
To enroll, families complete the Student Paperwork posted on the website and return it by email to eagleswingsinstructors@gmail.com, by mail, or in person. General questions go to info@eagleswingsstable.org or 937-570-5709. See our guide to equine therapy costs for how riding fees compare.
The Horses and Staff
Rebekah Hastings is the head certified instructor. She began as an instructor in training at Eagles' Wings in 2009 and holds an associate degree in equine studies from Ohio University Southern. Michaela Garcia, a former side walker, is a certified instructor, and Jaclyn Moorman is the administrative assistant and coordinator. The staff page lists two part-time instructors certified through the Certified Horsemanship Association.
The center says its horses are its largest operating expense. Ed Bauman is board president.
Volunteering
Volunteers must be at least 14, and no horse experience is needed because training is provided. The commitment is about 1.5 to 2 hours a week. Volunteers fill out an online application, read the volunteer handbook and sign up for shifts through an online scheduler.
Location
Eagles' Wings is based at 5730 N. Washington Road in Piqua, in Miami County. The center is building a new facility at 4260 State Route 589 in Casstown and plans to move there once it is finished. The website lists the Casstown address for mail, and families can contact the center to confirm where lessons meet.
