Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, that has offered equine-assisted services since 1981. About the Program
Greystone Manor started with seven riders in 1981 and now has more than 50 students in weekly one-on-one lessons. Lessons last 45 minutes and run year-round. The center asks students to commit to a weekly lesson, and certified therapeutic instructors teach every lesson with help from trained volunteers. Group programs are generally unmounted, with participants working with horses on the ground. Groups cover life skills, behavioral health, trauma and mental health, and leadership, and the center works with schools and community agencies to build custom curriculum. Silver Saddles is a four-week program for adults 55 and older that covers horse behavior, care and handling. It requires a moderate level of exercise, including standing for periods of time and walking on uneven ground.
The Horses and Staff
The team page lists seven instructors, including the program director, along with a barn manager, an office manager, a program and volunteer assistant, and a barn and horse assistant. The center says several of its volunteers have trained to become PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors. The farm has barns, arenas and open pastures, and families can arrange a tour by appointment. Each fall the center holds a horse show that is open to any rider who has completed at least one session.
Volunteering
Volunteers age 14 and older assist with lessons, often one to three hours a week. Substitute roles don't require a weekly commitment. No horse experience is needed, and the center provides training. New volunteers apply online through the Volunteer Portal and attend a New Volunteer Orientation, and volunteers 18 and older need Pennsylvania background clearances.
